I can relate to your sadness
My wife married me 25 years ago after her first lover left her for another and I was always aware that I was #2 in her life.
2 yars ago his wife died tragically in a car accident. We now invite him over for dinner once a month and then I leave to let them romance each other for a couple of hours.
