A decade now.
I am 27 year old staff sergeant in the Marine Corp. Before I left for bootcamp 10 years ago I proposed to my best friend, who of course my girlfriend. She turned me down not because she didn't love me and want to get married but because I was becoming a soldier. Her last words to me were " I love you, and I would have loved to be your wife, but I couldn't stand to see you leave for years at a time, I'm really sorry." This was in 2001 I haven't seen or spoken to her since then buy I'm still in love with her.

This is a bullshit post! Number one any self respecting MARINE knows it's marine corps. The s is silent. Number two dumbass army boys call themselves soldiers...not MARINES! go kill yourself.
Technically a single person noun would belong to a single tenses subject so Corps would become Corp. Not saying this is an honest post but at least a grammatically correct one.
That's a sad but great story.
