I told my brother he was no good and to stay away from me
My brother was married and he had a baby with the lady. The marriage didn't work out because my brother fooled around with another woman and she divorced him.
My brother married the other woman and the other woman demanded that the little girl from his previous marriage be banned from their lives.
My father dotes on the little girl and she's my niece and I love her. In the meantime, my brother got mad because his daughter was such an important part of our lives. My father and I told him in the presence of his new wife that we would continue to interact with his grandchild and that he was the one who needed to stay away. I backed my father up and I told him I felt the same way and that I would treat his child like my niece and if he didn't like it he could get out of my life too.
The girl is doing fine. My brother is out of the picture and I hope he stays out.
I'm sorry that your family has had such difficulty: I know that's painful, and I just hope it isn't permanent. All that said, however, and for whatever it's worth to you, I think you absolutely did the right thing. The niece/granddaughter is family, she is innocent in the intrafamily turmoil, and she deserves to be recognized and treated like one of you. It's rare anymore that people will do what's right, but you chose to do that, and have maintained your course. Well done!
