Back in my day (American Football)

My nephew plays American football in high school. Today I went out with his Dad (my brother) and watched him practice. He isn't very good. He tries hard, but he just isn't big or athletic enough to compete well. It's okay. He's just not the athlete that others in the family were. He likes to play anyway.

Today he was on special teams, receiving, and they were doing a kickoff drill. Both sides were running full speed. My nephew went to block some kid, and WOAH, he got knocked into oblivion. His body flew about 6 feet in the air and his head looked like it was spinning on a swivel. He was totally out cold. I knew he was still alive, because his legs were twitching, but it was bad. His arms moved a bit, which was also a good sign, because I knew he wasn't paralyzed.

The coaches immediately attended to him. I went down with his Dad and we checked him out too. He definitely had his bell rung, but it wasn't any more than anyone who has ever played the game has experienced. The coaches said, "We'll keep him out for a couple of weeks, if not longer, because he probably has a concussion. He needs to see a doctor."

I went "Concussion? Doctor? What do you think happens in football? Tell him to shake it off! The season starts in less than two weeks, and he needs to be playing." They were pretty indignant about my concerns, but I still pressed on by saying that they were not training men to be successful on the gridiron battlefield of war, but training a bunch of sissies. They told me to get off of the property, and I did, because I was half-lit and didn't want to make more of a scene.

In my day, though, you could get knocked out cold and were still expected to play. And we had helmets that were far inferior to those that are worn today. They were basically cheap plastic with minimal padding. I want my nephew to be a real man, but what does it say about society that they will never let him be one by challenging him? If I were the coach, I'd give him some smelling salts and tell him to get his rear back out there and battle. It's football.

    • ............so sad....

    • Concussions can lead to permanent brain damage. I suspect that is what happened to you.

    • If you did that, you'd get sued and you'd lose everything you own. It's not attitude; it's science.

    • Concussion is a big thing these days. The detremental effects accumulate.

    • ^Agreed. Shaking it off, does not make you a man.. Please.

    • ....moron..............

    • CTE is real.

    • It's overstated. It's not the problem that ESPN wants you think it is. They're on the air 24 hours a day: they have to have something to talk about. So, they take small things and blow them up into large things, so they can talk about them longer. Is CTE a problem? Yes. Is it the big deal that ESPN would have you believe it is? No.

    • People are dying from it. It's a huge deal.

    • Agreed. We're encouraging our boys and young men to be pansies. They need to toughen up.

    • ^^correct^^ all those little ** need to grow a pair.

    • Yep, they need to, but they won't. Trust me. Ain't gonna happen.
