If you are "going out" you are dating. Like go to dinner,a movie,or wherever the two of you are going.that is how you know you're dating. A relationship is the next step after dating. If you've gone out a few times and aren't sure if the two of you are in a relationship, you can say something like, we've been dating for a while now, and I was wondering if we can take things to the next level and be in a relationship.
