I feel like if you flip flopped this statement, it would be good advice. "Instead of focusing on what you are not, focus on what you are." Most people's issues come from the fact that they expect themselves to be something they really aren't.
I think you missed the intended message by trying to twist it to fit your preconceived notion of self worth. If you only focus on what you are, you will become self-centered and never grow into what you could be.
I didn't miss the intended message at all, I just don't agree with it. Your advice is already twisted to fit its author's preconceived notions of self worth. If you only focus on what you could be, you don't give yourself the chance to enjoy what you are.
