New way of thinking

Rather than obsessing about what you are.
You should focus on what you're not.

  • I feel like if you flip flopped this statement, it would be good advice. "Instead of focusing on what you are not, focus on what you are." Most people's issues come from the fact that they expect themselves to be something they really aren't.

  • I think you missed the intended message by trying to twist it to fit your preconceived notion of self worth. If you only focus on what you are, you will become self-centered and never grow into what you could be.

  • I didn't miss the intended message at all, I just don't agree with it. Your advice is already twisted to fit its author's preconceived notions of self worth. If you only focus on what you could be, you don't give yourself the chance to enjoy what you are.

  • Aww, are you sad because OP didn't go with hackneyed pop psych sound bites?

Normally, yes-- to grow and be happy, one should normally focus on what one has rather than what they don't have. However, for the emotionally immature (which describes most people using this site), that's just about the worst advice ever. Social media is primarily powered by people yelling "look at me"-- are they demanding that people adore them for what they have, or what they don't have? Give yourself a minute to mull that one over. Stop if it starts to hurt your brain.

Focusing on what you have to the exclusion of the other feeds narcissism really well, and it looks like there's a lot of that going on out there. As usual, humans as a group can't find a healthy working balance between two extremes.
