US citizenship as a tool of political manipulation.
Perhaps the one of the most insidious reasons that United States citizenship was extended to the people of Puerto Rico was the need of manpower or cannon fodder for the Western Front.
On March 2, 1917, the United States extended US citizenship to the Puerto Ricans via the Jones Act, and a few days later, on April 6 1917 the United States declared war on Germany and the Central Powers. US citizenship extended to the Puerto Ricans in order to draft them into the military to bolster the numbers of troops.
What isn't insidious about US geopolitics? Perhaps that's the way of the world, but Americans could gain so much more awareness if they shed themselves of the "good guy vs bad guy" mentality, where the US is a force for good and fights evil regimes. Every conflict we have a hand in now is simply about maintaining a global hegemony in world that's evolving.
Sounds like a "colony" situation, not a common wealth. :(
