Friends you will never see again
I was in Atlanta Ga in a pub which is over thirty miles from my home. I was only there because I had had previous business in town.
A young black woman sat next to me, I'm white.
I was kind of lonesome so I decided to talk to her. I explained I was not a perve but I would like to have a conversation with her. I was decades older than she was.
It turned out she at age 32 had just earned her degree in art after working at a bakery since she was in high school. I praised her to high Heaven telling her how proud I was of her and I wished her every luck in the world. She told me she was proud of herself and I reiterated how great her achievement was.
She had been attending The Atlanta School of Art since age 18.
There was a short silence in the conversation and I told her that while we would probably never see the other person again I was happy to have made her acquaintance. She gave me a brief sad look but it was the truth.
To this day I tell people about her but alas never again have I set eyes on her.
Two ships in the night.
