Jewish guy told me not to touch him
I was in History class in college when a acquaintance of mine asked a small group of people if anyone there was Jewish as he had a joke he wanted to tell. Ok a student who was Jewish spoke up and said he was. The acquaintance then refused to tell the joke even though the Jewish guy said he wanted to hear it.
By now I had walked to my seat in class being glad it wasn't me in my acquaintance situation. How embarrassed he must have been.
Ok the Jewish guy told me not to touch him. I had had no part in the joke having no idea someone was going to tell it. He must have thought I was friends with the joker.
I merely knew him when I saw him. We had had no classes in high school and I only barely knew him.
Once when I told this story a Jewish individual replied that since the Jewish guy thought I was his friend I should have spoken up but in reality I didn't know either one of them that much. I was only 18 and I had a lot to learn about life.
OK 40 years later at work my manager told a Jewish employee he had done business with a person of his "nationality" hi time I spoke up. What Nationality is that Bob? He said said well you know what I'm talking about and I replied no because if you are born in America your an American.
I continued saying perhaps you are speaking of his religious faith? I said Mr. Sturman was Jewish but he was as American as anyone else.
Bob didn't say anything else. Not sure what was ging on in his mind but this time I stood up for my Jewish friend.
