One of my best friends cuts a lot and I told a teacher, who told a counselor, and now her mother knows and she is going to a therapist. She absolutely hates me now... What do I do to relieve some of my stress about all of this? And what do I do to help her?

  • You did the right thing. Don't doubt that for a moment. She's very lucky to have a friend who cares so much about her. Give her some time, she'll come around. Don't take it personally. She's kept a secret for so long, she probably is grateful for the help, but just can't see it yet. It's probably easier for her to be mad at you, because she's not ready to take responsibility. Does that make sense? You've done a lot for her. You can continue to let her know that you're there for her. But you also need to take care of you. If you need to talk with someone like a therapist or a counselor, you should. Try exercise, talking, laughing and going out with your friends to relieve some of the stress and take your mind off of it. This will pass. Hang in there.

  • You did the right thing by telling, and she will see that in time. Cutting is a very difficult and complicated thing to deal with. You were a good friend for caring and telling. As a former cutter, I can tell you firsthand that it feels good to have someone give a damn.
