The new walk of shame
These days many if not all companies have a terminated employee escorted out of the building. You gather your belongings into a box and out the door you go escorted by a former fellow employee.
Its humiliating. I don't believe its necessary unless the former employee did something violent.
I used be a security guard; and have done some of that escorting, myself. I really felt sorry for them. It was obviously one of the worst days of their life; especially if they had been with the company for a number of years and were looking forward to building a career, there.
It is necessary because most companies do not allow non-employees to walk around buildings unaccompanied. Also, a lot of fired take a lot of time to leave and cause drama. I agree, it feels bad. But if you have ever seen one of these go sideways you might understand better.
My intention was to walk straight out the door not looking left or right and get in my car and leave never to return. I realize that other more disgrunted terminated employees make a scene but I think the ** should have been present at my termination and not have me wait until they go get him.
