When do you give up on somebody?
I was trying to help this guy with a drinking problem. He had been a coworker but he came to work drunk and despite the companies efforts to help him he got himself fired. He would come to work completely loaded.
Ok I took him to the VA and he blamed everyone else but himself for losing his job. My efforts weren't working. The last time I came to his apartment he started yelling and shouting and cussing at me so I left his drunk ** sitting in his easy chair.
You can't help someone like him. I mean you can't not drink for him he has to do that himself.
I left the apartment and he got kicked out and after a period of homelessness he died on the street.
...when they don't say something...
Once a person have given up on themselves, there is only this much anyone can do. But it is noble to try. It is always noble to give a person a chance. And not blame ourselves when our efforts apparently do not work. This is what they call the character. It is noble to make efforts to help somebody also when these efforts do not work. +
