Sometimes I resent my husband

Sometimes I resent my husband because I chose him over my career. I'm still paying student loans on a degree that's now worthless because I had to move and change jobs to be with him. I still love him and I realize it was my choice, but sometimes I wonder how my life would have turned out if I had chosen the career instead.

  • I'm the original poster. My major was linguistics with a minor in Asian studies, and the career I gave up was to study the various dialects in a specific region in Asia. I was 100% sure this was going to be my life's work until I met the man who would become my husband.

It was a choice between the career of my dreams and the man of my dreams, and sometimes I wonder if I made the right choice. My husband is wonderful, but every time I fork over a student loan payment for the education I'll never use I can't help but think about "what if".

  • It doesn't sound like any of this is his fault, so feeling resentment towards him seems unfair. What was your major? Maybe you could commute to somewhere somewhat nearby in order to find a job and help support yourself and your husband.

  • It's human nature to wonder of course but i don't think you honestly resent choosing him i think you might resent not negotiation a solution for you and your career choice but honestly it's never to late go for it anyways, try to get him to support your decision too it will make you too closer as well.

  • I'm sorry you feel this week, but maybe you could do what the first poster said and look for a part-time job that would use your degree?
I'm sure it isn't easy having to give up the career of your dreams, but we all make choices and sometimes we don't know we'll regret a choice until much later.

  • Doesn't sound like he made demands on you. Any resentment you have sounds like your own doing. Sorry.
