Vent #37841

I work at a small grocery store and today I saw an interaction between a married couple that completely explains the wife's sometimes weird behavior. It just clicked.
He hardly ever comes in with her. Today was the second time I've seen him in five years.
She's very jumpy and too happy at times. I thought maybe she was on drugs (I see a lot of that) or maybe an anti-depressant of some sort (see a lot of weird behavior from those too, admitted by customers).
He stood by the counter while she ran around the store getting whatever he yelled at her. I see a lot of that too, usually because whoever is yelling is ill or disabled. Lists, anyone? Yeah... Anyway
Then, as he was paying he motioned towards the pet food aisle and asked her if she wanted Alpo or Kibbles N Bits for her dinner. At first I was going to laugh because many male customers often joke about how they're "fixing supper" when they buy canned dogfood. Then I looked over at the wife and the look on her face betrayed the gravity of his comment. I quit smiling. He looked at me and I looked at him and many things not suitable to say in church flew silently between us in a matter of nanoseconds. He straightened up and asked me what my preferred brand is. I wanted to look him in the eye and say something that would've gotten me fired but I held my tongue. I know that A-it likely would've made things worse for her and B-he may have escalated very quickly. As in need-the-cops quickly. I've only seen eyes like his in a very few people in my 37 years and that woman is scared for her life. I will never forget her expression.

    • Typical. The first thing you did wrong was think she was on drugs. Why do people always, always ASSume everyone else is on drugs?

The second thing you did, little church mouse, was what you didn't do: ask a community resource what you might be able to do for her, if anything.

You just sat there and judged, judged, judged and did nothing else.

This is why I cheer when yet another mass shooting happens and everyone runs around crying "WHYYYYY did this happen?" If you can't figure out the very basic reason, stay the ** out of head-slapping range when in my presence.

    • And you called the cops?
or are you going to stand by and just let it happen?

    • I'm going to stand by and just let it happen. Then when he finally kills her-- or she snaps and kills HIM-- I'll act very very surprised. Baa.
